Sunsets

Sunsets are the capstones of amazing days.  Capturing the sun just as it disappears feels like such like an amazing accomplishment. Just looking at this picture, I can feel the cool autumn air envelope me just as the warmth of the sun slowly disappears.  The evening I caught this sunset I was actually driving home from dinner with friends.  The sky was glowing and had to grab the shot.  Of course I always have my camera, the only thing I needed to do was find the perfect angle.  I have a couple of shots where the sun is still visible but it is almost overwhelming.  This moment, just as the sun sunk below the horizon, lasted for only a minute.  It did not take long for the orange glow to dim and the cool breeze to erase all memory of the warm inviting sun.

  1. Sarah,
This is a beautiful shot. What kind of camera do you use?

  2. As educators we are expected to cram in required units and standards into the classroom, run to meetings, workshops, conferences, meet deadlines, and hope that we meet each and every student's needs. As your blog description states, if we just took the time to look what is really going on around us and the good we have done in the classroom, life would be as picturesque as your sunset!

  3. Sarah,
Thanks for sharing a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L sunset! It makes me feel like you captured the end of a great day (hopefully it was for you)! I look forward to viewing and sharing the visual as well as your depth of description. We have had a wonderful fall here in Missouri and I certainly can appreciate your vivid description of the evening! How long have you been a photographer?

  4. @Charisse I have a couple of cameras, for this shot I was using my Nikon D60 with a 18-55mm lens. I was shooting automatic. I would like to explore my manual settings but I often am trying to capture a moment. If I hesitate to figure out my camera I am likely to lose the image.

  5. @Colette I agree. It was for this reason I choose to take this opportunity to write a blog about something other then my "job". I often allow teaching to take over every facet of my life because I am passionate. I would like to step back and reopen my eyes.

  6. @Amy Thank you for your kind comments. The sunset did end a great day, making it even more beautiful. I have been taking pictures for as long as I can remember. I have photographed everything from weddings, to portraits and sporting events. I have backed away from these types of events because it was becoming "work" rather then an outlet for creativity. I am excited to post my next image.

  7. Sarah,
Thanks for the camera info. My college daughter wants to upgrade from a typical point-and-shot so I trying to learn more about what is out there. It sounds like the Nikon D60 has removable lens? Thank goodness for the auto settings - I'm glad you got the shot.

  8. Wonderful photo...
"I often allow teaching to take over every facet of my life because I am passionate." Well stated. I have to force myself to 'do something else' sometimes AND not feel guilty about it.

  9. Charisse, yes the D60 has removeable lens. I WISH I could afford more than the two that I have. Taking the leap from small point and shoots to even a low end SLR is huge. Between the zoom lenses and the macro lens, SLR is worth the money!! I recommend going to Ritz Camera. They have an amazing damage plan and they work hard to get you the camera you want. They are also very knowledgeable of their equipment so there are no "dumb" questions. If you are ever in the Manchester Mall tell Barbara (their manager) I sent you and she will take care of you.

  10. Sarah,

Great job with the picture! I do agree, we as teachers do surround ourselves with our job. I think it is just the nature of the profession. My wife is also a teacher, and it is hard to escape from it. We sometimes forget that our lives are not our jobs, but each other. Thank you for reminding me that there is more to life than just our jobs.
